The Cookie Grandmother

There is a grandmother in this story who makes cookies.

Not a polite dozen when someone is sick. An army. Batches upon batches, deployed with such consistent love and in such volume that the word “army” is the only one that fits. She baked when the news was hard. She baked when the family needed something warm and real to hold. She baked because that was what she knew how to give, and she gave it without reservation.

There is a whole philosophy of care contained in a tray of cookies. It says: I thought about you. I made time for you. I turned flour and butter and sugar into something you can hold in your hands and eat. It says: you are not alone and I intend to prove it repeatedly.

Emmy’s family knew this grandmother’s cookies well. This page exists in part because of people like her.
