In the summer of 2017, Emmy traveled to Boston for proton radiation therapy — one of the best options available for treating her cancer while minimizing long-term side effects. It meant leaving Colorado, leaving their mountain town, leaving the rhythms that had sustained them.
Christopher’s Haven, a Boston-based organization providing free long-term housing for pediatric cancer patients and their families, made that chapter livable. The family stayed there through the weeks of daily proton treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Months later, Emmy rang the bell at Burr Proton Center. She was two years old.
